Welcome to My Treasuring Chest for Parents!

This section of My Treasuring Chest offers a variety of resources to those with a parenting influence with children and teens to help them build self esteem, self respect and self confidence. It takes a family to raise a child, including parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and adult relatives, teachers, coaches and friends of the family.

Adults play a key role in the development of children. Every parent was a child at one time. Each of us has heard the words of others, picked up their suggestions and made them into beliefs. Some of those beliefs have been helpful, many may have placed limits on us based on the source. A parent's role in children's development is as effective as the thoughts, words, feelings and actions given to children.

Psychologists have known for some time how children develop. Children are like sponges.  They absorb so much from their environment, even before they begin talking.  What they learn and experience at a very young age may not be remembered by their conscious minds, but the feelings and self-talk becomes embedded in who they are and what they believe about themselves.

Self esteem, self respect and self confidence provide the foundation for a healthy and happy life. Those with a parenting influence understand the importance of self esteem and take action to create a positive environment that builds up the self esteem of children and teens. The needs of boys, girls and teens all differ, so developing strategies for each stage of development is an important responsibility

Mothers, grandmothers, aunts and godmothers exert a very important influence in raising children who are between the ages of six and 18. Despite common challenges that many women face, their relationships with each son and daughter is unique. The parenting influence of motherhood lasts throughout the entire life of a son or daughter beyond the teen years as moms can continue to affirm their children and children's children throughout life.

With a similar intention, but in a unique way, fathers build self confidence in their sons and daughters, too. There are many different types of situations that dads face, such as single parenthood, being adoptive fathers or divorced fathers. A father's heart and involvement in his children's development brings a sense of balance and fulfillment during a child's growing years.

Teenagers bridge the gap between the world of childhood and mature adults. Parenting teens involves a greater understanding of adolescence and a deeper commitment to communicating love and respect for their growth process.

Wise parents, both moms and dads, take care to make sure that each family member is valued and feels at home. By intentionally opening your heart to treasure your children and teens, you will build a lifetime of love that will make you proud of your family.
